Commonly known as Indian gooseberry, the botanical name of amla is Phyllanthus emblica.

Amla is highly enriched with vitamin C (ascorbic acid). A 100 gram of fresh amla contains much more vitamin C than 20 oranges and hence known as “Superfruit“. 100 grams of amla approximately contain 50kcal energy, 0.5 gm protein, 13.7 gm carbs, 0.1 gm fat, 1.2 mg iron, 50mg calcium, 20 mg phosphorus and 600 mg vitamin C. Moreover, it is decent source of vitamin E. Amla is an excellent treasure of antioxidants. It reduces the damage to our cells by capturing the free radicals.

One of the easiest ways to eat amla is to cut the fruit and eat it raw. To balance the sour taste, sprinkle salt on it. You can also add a dash of red chili powder. This will help enhance the taste and make it easier to consume the fruit.

Amla juice serves as a beneficial tonic for both skin and hair. It strengthens your hair follicles thereby facilitating hair growth and strengthening of the hair.

Eating fresh gooseberry or applying its paste on the roots of your hair improves hair growth and color.

Amla is a wonder fruit but it has side effects as well so don't have it in excess. Use very small quantity in the form of chutney or pickle, better to have a ayurvedic doctors advice, but it must be taken along with, mishri, honey, jaggery etc for better health results. It reduces fat in the body so one may have dry skin and other effects.
